What cookies are
Cookies are small text files a website stores in your browser. They let a site remember things between page loads — that you are signed in, for example. We also use similar technologies such as local storage, and this policy covers those too.
Cookies we set
| Name | Purpose | Lifetime | Type |
|---|---|---|---|
scsid | Keeps you signed in and links your requests to your session. | Session / 24 hours | Essential |
csrf | Protects forms against cross-site request forgery. | Session | Essential |
_ga, _ga_* | Google Analytics — aggregate visit statistics. | Up to 2 years | Analytics |
__gads, __gpi | Google AdSense — ad delivery and frequency capping. | Up to 13 months | Advertising |
Analytics and advertising cookies are only set when those services are enabled on the site.
Essential cookies
These make the site work: signing in, keeping your session, protecting forms, and remembering short-lived preferences. They cannot be switched off from within the site, because without them core features fail. They do not track you across other websites.
Analytics cookies
Where enabled, Google Analytics tells us which pages are read, how visitors arrive and where they leave — in aggregate, not as individual profiles. This helps us decide what to improve. You can opt out with the Google Analytics opt-out add-on.
Advertising cookies
Where advertising is enabled, Google and its partners may set cookies to select and measure ads. You can control personalised advertising in Google Ad Settings, and opt out of many providers at optout.aboutads.info.
Managing cookies in your browser
Every major browser lets you see, delete and block cookies. Blocking essential cookies will sign you out and break parts of the site.
- Chrome — Settings → Privacy and security → Third-party cookies
- Safari — Settings → Privacy → Manage Website Data
- Firefox — Settings → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data
- Edge — Settings → Cookies and site permissions
Changes
If we add or remove a service that sets cookies, we update this page and the date at the top of it.
